I have been doing a lot of new things. Learning to operate a Dry Cleaning Plant has been full of new information, lessons, and fear. It’s much like learning to stand on my hands or do a tricky back bend, the experience makes me nervous and unsettled. I like to be confident with what I am doing and lately that’s a little tricky because so much is new.
But doing new things is good for me. It’s why going to a yoga class is one of my favorite things to do, I learn new things in every class I attend and I am always better for it no matter how hard it was to get there. When I learn new things my attention is always present, I am aware of my every action and no moment is dropped in boredom. Doing new things keeps me engaged in life.
A friend once suggested that I do something new every ten years. He himself is older than I am by about twenty years and has taken to his own suggested behavior, as a result he has lived a very full, enjoyable and exciting life. He was once almost eaten by a hippo, or so he says. And that’s the thing about doing new things, they take you on great adventures. Note to self, do something new every ten years.
A committed yoga practice is much bigger than the asana accomplished on the mat. A committed yoga practice shines into life in all places and all ways and enables the translation of what is done on the mate into action in the world; fear, courage, excitement and all.
Whether on the mat or in the world doing new things is mostly frightening. Likewise on the mat and in the world meeting ourselves in the company of our discomfort and insecurity is tough, ultimately rewarding and almost always fun. It is fun to take on something that is daunting and to rise to the occasion and become triumphant in confidence. It is fun to be alive in a body.
This autumn I encourage you to take on something new. On your mat and in your life. Pick a pose, pick a challenge, do it now, there is no better time. And know your aren’t alone. Every time you see a baby stumble or hear a question or drive by a new business or a school think of all of the people like you learning to do better and be better, engaged in life, rising to the challenge of doing something new.
With Love, Always, in All Ways, For Giving, In Joy,
